Lerato Kganyago and Katlego Maboe will host the 2023 Metro FM Music Awards, in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, next month.
The awards take place on Saturday, 6 May, at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga and will be broadcast on SABC 1 (DStv 191) and streamed on SABC+ and Metro FM’s YouTube channel.
The last staging of the awards, in 2017, was marred by claims of corruption by late musician Riky Rick during his acceptance speech, where he slammed radio stations for the alleged lack of support for local musicians and claimed local record companies bought awards.
Per a statement, the decision to appoint Kganyago and Maboe as the hosts is based on “their skills as sought-after hosts who are able to carry events of this calibre”.
“The two presenters exude class and high energy, elements that embody the prestigious Metro FM Awards,” the statement continued.
Kganyago said she was thrilled and honored to be entrusted with the role of co-hosting the prestigious Metro FM Music Awards 2023 alongside the incredibly talented Katlego Maboe.
“As a long-standing member of the Metro FM family with seven years of experience and with a solid background in live television and broadcasting, I understand the significance of this event, and I am confident in my ability to deliver an exceptional experience for South Africa’s music fans,” she said.
The return of the music awards was announced in January. It was initially scheduled to take place on Saturday, 29 April however, in March, the SABC announced that it was postponed to May due to “circumstances beyond our control.”
There will be a live broadcast on the awards show on SABC 1 (DStv 191) and streamed on SABC+ and Metro FM’s YouTube channel.
“The MMAs are a true highlight of the year for music lovers, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it all,” Kganyago said. “Together with Katlego Maboe, we promise to bring an unparalleled level of class, energy and excitement to the stage.”
She added, “Get ready for a night that will leave you mesmerized and craving for more as we celebrate the very best of South African music with the industry’s leading artists and producers.”
