Radio Kakata, a member of the Association of Liberia Community Radio (ALICOR) in Margibi County has announced female broadcaster, Christiana Sonpon as its new manager.
The announcement marked a pivotal moment in the station’s history as it continues to serve its audience with reliable news and engaging contents, since its establishment by MERCY CORPS following the end of the Liberian civil war in 2003. The station mission was mainly towards promoting peace messages and community dialogue.
Sonpon is a seasoned media professional with extensive experience at Classic FM. She also serves as the Margibi’s coordinator of the Female Journalist Association of Liberia (FEJAL).
She takes on the new role replacing Jerry Jenkins Quoi, who was earlier suspended by the county superintendent, Victoria Duncan, on administrative reasons.
Her appointment meanwhile comes at a crucial time when the station seeks to enhance its programming and engage more effectively with its audience. Under her leadership, there are plans to revitalize the station’s content, incorporating diverse and dynamic programming that resonates with the community’s needs and interests, including potential expansions into digital platforms to reach a wider audience and incorporating more interactive segments that allow for community feedback and participation.
The staff at Radio Kakata have expressed optimism about the changes that Sonpon is expected to implement. Many are eager to see improvements in the station’s operations and programming, which they believe will foster greater community involvement and support. There is a strong belief that Sonpon’s leadership will not only maintain the station’s legacy but also propel it into a new era of growth and innovation.
Internews Liberia, the implementer of the USAID funded Liberia Media Development Activities, which is a major partner to the ALICOR congratulated Sonpon on her preferement.
“This appointment is a significant step forward for women’s leadership in Liberian media. Christiana joins a small but growing group of women managing radio stations across the country, including Radio Cape Mount, Radio Webbo, Top FM, and now Radio Kakata.” Internews said in a statement.
