Some of South Africa’s popular radio and stage personalities have embarked on a relief effort to aid victims of the recent floods victims in KawZulu-Natal.
Metro FM drive host Tbo Touch, DJ and Afrotainment founder Tira, Jerusalema singer Nomcebo Zikode and Osama hitmaker Zakes Bantwini are some of the celebs behind the United Artists of South Africa Relief which aims to raise R1 million.
Touch revealed that the campaign has realized at least R300.
“In the wake of the KZN floods, we decided to start a campaign called United Creatives of South Africa Relief. We shall be hosting a series of events called Abantu,” he said.
The Metro FM journalist also shared that the agreement is that every volunteering artist contributes at least 20% of their gig earnings from now until July.
He also told the publication that they aim to buy at least 20 000 blankets, 1 000 ventilated tents and tinned food for the flood victims.
In addition, he shared how the victims can get assistance from this campaign.
“None of us will manage the account and instead, we are talking to a church to assist us. The flood victims will simply have to go to the identified church and prove they have been affected,” he explained.
Not only will this relief fund assist victims of the KZN floods, but celebs who have been affected by the COVID lockdown will also get help.
Touch explained that after July they will be concentrating on the entertainment industry with the hopes of starting a medical aid scheme.
“Our plight as artists is known and well documented. Most of us haven’t worked for two years. A lot of us need therapy. Therefore, we want to use this relief fund to reach out to our colleagues. We are actually hoping to establish our own medical aid focusing on creatives.”
