The Voice of Sinoe Community Radio located in southeastern Liberia is celebrating an appreciable reduction in the daily running cost of the station with the installation of a 5 kilowatts of solar energy power system.
The Solar energy installation as part of USAID-Liberia Media Activity’s technical capacity-building support to the community radio sector of Liberia, through Internews.
Situated in a Greenville, Sinoe County, a place heavily inaccessible, particularly during the wet season, the alternative solar power supply will be a major relief for this resource-challenged community radio station.
The current high cost of fuel coupled with expenses associated with regular maintenance of power generators prevent many community radio stations in Liberia from maintaining their normal broadcast.
Most community radio station depend on power source from GSM companies operating in the country, especially Orange and Lonestar MTN. The stations feed on the generators supplying electricity to towers hosting the GSM companies transmission equipment, which many of the stations also use to host their transmission antenna.
