One of Botswana’s most recognizable and beloved radio voices is officially transitioning from the airwaves to the political arena.
Letumile “Lets” Montsosa, the former host of Radio Botswana’s highly popular morning show Masaasele, has announced his intention to run for a parliamentary seat in the Thamaga-Kumakwane constituency ahead of the 2029 General Election.
The announcement marks a major career pivot for the veteran broadcaster and ends months of intense speculation following his departure from public radio earlier this year.
During his time behind the microphone, Montsosa built a loyal, nationwide following through his work at both the commercial station Duma FM and the state broadcaster Radio Botswana (RB1).
He was widely praised by listeners and media peers for revitalizing RB1’s flagship morning program Masaasele, stepping into a prime slot that had been incredibly difficult to fill following the passing of iconic broadcaster Thuso “Thusoski” Letlhoma in 2020.
Known for his warm on-air personality and natural ability to connect with ordinary citizens, Montsosa’s sudden absence from the airwaves in early 2026 became a major talking point in Botswana’s media sector. His departure followed a controversial broadcast regarding the Constitutional Court, during which listener call-ins were heavily restricted.
Now, Montsosa is aiming to convert his massive broadcast popularity into political capital. He will be contesting in Thamaga-Kumakwane, a constituency of deeply personal significance as it includes his home village of Thamaga.
“I have received approaches from different political parties, but I have not made a final decision on where I belong politically,” Montsosa stated. “What I can confirm is that I intend to contest for the Thamaga-Kumakwane constituency.”
Though political organizations have reportedly courted him before both the 2019 and 2024 elections, the broadcaster noted that the time finally felt right to accept the challenge, citing continuous encouragement from his listeners and community members.
