Ghana’s broadcasting growth spotlighted as veteran producer Lawrenda Danso earns international recognition

Ghana’s vibrant radio industry is once again in the global spotlight with veteran radio producer Lawrenda Danso nominated for “Media Producer of the Year” at the Ghana Entertainment Awards USA 2025, to be held on 27 September in New Jersey.

The nomination underscores not only Danso’s personal achievements but also the growing influence of Ghana’s radio sector within the international media landscape.

Danso currently serves as the producer of Happy Evening Drive on Happy 98.9FM, one of Ghana’s most celebrated radio programs. With over 15 years of experience, she has built a reputation as one of the country’s most accomplished producers, guiding shows that blend entertainment, social issues, and community voices.

Her career began in television, before transitioning into radio, where she found new opportunities for creativity and impact. Over the years, she has worked with some of the country’s best-known broadcasters, including Eddy Blay, Giovanni Caleb, Dzifa Nkansah, Foster Romanus, and Veronica Napoleon (Akua Sika), the current host of Happy Evening Drive.

Speaking of her recognition, Dr. Timothy Karikari, Director of Global Media Alliance Broadcasting Company (GMABC), said:

“Most of the personalities she produced have developed and become household names in Ghana’s entertainment scene. Lawrenda has been instrumental in putting our shows on the global stage.”

Her nomination comes at a pivotal time for Ghana’s broadcasting industry. The National Communications Authority (NCA) recently revealed that Ghana has 763 licensed FM stations, with 539 currently operational. Commercial broadcasters dominate the sector, but community, campus, and public stations also play key roles in fostering local content and civic engagement.

The Ghana Entertainment Awards USA, which celebrates excellence in entertainment and media across the diaspora, has opened public voting until 20 September 2025 via www.ghentawards.com

For many, Danso’s recognition symbolizes more than individual success, it reflects Ghana’s maturing radio ecosystem, where behind-the-scenes professionals are shaping content that resonates locally while earning respect abroad.

As Ghana strengthens its place in Africa’s dynamic media landscape, Danso’s story highlights the power of radio as a driver of cultural identity, public discourse, and global recognition.
