Jukulyn FM Vibes, a youth-driven online radio station, is set to be launched on Friday, 25 April.
This new platform will give the Soshanguve township of South Africa a chance to voice their thoughts and showcase their talents.
Pastor Darling Mathaba, who is the station’s founder and co-director, said the studio is based at Open Bible Church (OBC) at Block X, next to the clinic and opposite the community hall.
The station was established in April 2024 and began airing online in March 2025.
“At the moment, our station is an online platform. However, we are busy with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa to pay the license fee for the frequency. This will allow anyone who doesn’t have data to also access the station,” he said.
The station’s programming will focus on gender-based violence, crime prevention, youth empowerment, business development, and the celebration of local languages and heritage, among other topics.
Pastor Mathaba called on stakeholders to invest in the collaboration before opening it to the whole community.
Residents have shown interest and excitement for the launch, with some seeing
potential for positive change. “It’s about time. There is a lot of talent in Jukulyn that people don’t know about,” said Lesego Ndaba.
However, others have raised concerns about safety and security.
“Since the station is based in Jukulyn, will there be police visibility or should people be ready to be hijacked while coming for interviews?” asked Mike Mabuza.
Kwena Moreledi also expressed concerns about safety.
“We really like to bring out talent there, but how will we know we won’t be robbed because it’s Jukulyn we’re speaking about here, shootings can occur anytime,” he said.
Lewatle Mmamabolo suggested the radio station should focus on positive stories.
“The radio station should cover all corners of Soshanguve, not only Jukulyn. We are tired of violence and crime updates. Let’s hear positive stories.”
The launch event promises to be an exciting milestone for the community.
“We only have limited space of about 100 people only. The sooner they confirm attendance, the better,” said Pastor Mathaba.
