Veteran Liberian journalist, Samuel G. Dweh is dead. Dweh was pronounced dead at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia, following at protracted period of illness.
He served the media in Liberia in many capacities, including on radio, and contributed to many news platforms, including RadioInfo Africa, where he briefly served as a freelance journalist.
In 2014, photos of him trended on social media, showing how he was gradually fading away into obscurity as he experienced unbearable hardships.
In a post he made on Facebook in April 2024 after his photos made rounds attracting empathies, he shared his poor living condition, revealing that he was forced to sleep in a school building due to financial constraints, while his health was deteriorating.
Dweh made a heartfelt plea to the public for assistance, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate support to improve his living conditions
“My gratitude to all my friends who pour out their individual empathetic feelings for my living in a school building (since January 2024), being infused with dosage of malaria (from the multitudes of mosquitoes in the classroom I am sleeping in, and for appealing to other colleagues,” he wrote.
Colleagues in Liberia and in the United States immediately organized fundraisers to cover his medication expenses and help improve his living condition.
Upon news of his passing, friends and colleagues have continued to expressed tributes, while a rally is ongoing among journalists to voluntarily contribute to his funeral scheduled for February 22.
“Samuel dedicated his life to serving our country, and as a media community, we now have the opportunity to pay our respects with a proper burial,” the memo shared on Facebook by a journalist at ECOWAS Radio, Oretha Bundo-Seh read.
“Any contribution, no matter the amount would be greatly appreciated and will go directly toward ensuring Samuel receives the dignified farewell he deserves.”
