NCA shuts down three Wontumi Multimedia radio stations for regulatory breaches in Ghana

The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana has ordered the suspension of three radio stations owned by Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, citing multiple breaches of Ghana’s broadcasting regulations.

The affected stations, 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi, are owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the NCA, the stations failed to correct regulatory violations, including the unauthorized use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operating from unapproved transmitter sites.

The suspension comes after the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by then-President John Dramani Mahama to allow defaulting stations to comply with the rules. The NCA says Wontumi Multimedia did not fully comply during the amnesty window.

The enforcement action, carried out under Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), prohibits operating without a valid Certificate of Compliance.

In addition to Wontumi Multimedia’s stations, six other radio stations across Ghana have also been shut down for failing to meet compliance requirements within the grace period.

The NCA says it will continue to monitor and enforce broadcasting standards to ensure that all FM operators abide by licensing conditions and national regulations.
