Metro FM marks 40 years with major lineup refresh as South African radio evolves

South African broadcaster Metro FM is marking its 40th anniversary with a refreshed programming lineup, blending established voices with new talent as it positions itself for a new era in urban radio.

The station announced its 2026/27 schedule, effective April 1, as part of celebrations leading up to its milestone anniversary in September. The changes introduce new presenters while retaining several of its most recognizable on-air personalities, reflecting what management describes as a balance between legacy and innovation.

Among the headline additions are media personalities Siyabonga Ngwekazi, known as Scoop Makhathini, and Nomuzi Mabena, who will co-host a new weekend lifestyle-driven show focused on music, culture, and conversation aimed at younger audiences.

Moozlie will also join Scoop Makhathini on “Lift Off,” an urban lifestyle program scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights, a slot expected to tap into South Africa’s nightlife and street culture.

The station is also investing in emerging radio talent, including Ricardo Genesis, who joins from Vow FM and will take over weekend slots previously hosted by Ismail Abrahams, who is leaving the station to pursue other opportunities in media.

Metro FM business manager Kina Nhlengethwa said the restructuring is intended to strengthen the station without losing its identity.

As Metro FM approaches 40 years, our intention is not to change what already works, but to celebrate the journey of the brand with the talent who has helped shape it over the years while making strategic additions that strengthen our offering,” she said.

The revamped lineup continues to feature established broadcasters including Lerato Kganyago, Thabo Molefe, Luthando Shosha, and Somizi Mhlongo, ensuring continuity for its long-standing audience base.

With programs such as “Best Mornings” and “The Touchdown” continuing alongside refreshed weekend offerings, Metro FM is reinforcing its position as one of South Africa’s most influential urban radio stations.

As Metro FM approaches 40 years… it continues to evolve with the times while staying true to the sound that made it a household name,” the station said in its outlook for the anniversary year.
