Radio Joy Africa 97.5 MHz, one of Liberia’s pioneering community-based radio stations, is celebrating 15 years of impactful broadcasting and public service, reaffirming its commitment to remain “A Voice for All” in promoting peace, democracy, and social inclusion across the nation.
Established on October 24, 2010, in Kakata, Margibi County, the station was founded by veteran Liberian journalist Patrick C. M. Kollie, whose vision emerged from his experiences during Liberia’s civil crisis. His goal was to create a media platform that would unite Liberians through information, education, and advocacy for human rights and good governance.
Over the years, Radio Joy Africa has grown into one of the country’s most influential community broadcasters, reaching more than one million listeners across nine counties, including Margibi, Montserrado, Grand Bassa, Bomi, Gbarpolu, and Grand Cape Mount. The station has remained steadfast in its principles of impartiality, independence, and professionalism, which are values that have earned it widespread respect and multiple national and international awards.
Throughout its 15-year journey, the station has played key roles in civic and voter education during Liberia’s major elections, as well as in nationwide awareness campaigns during the Ebola outbreak (2014–2016) and the COVID-19 pandemic. Its timely and credible reporting helped inform and unite communities during moments of crisis.
As the station looks to the future, Kollie emphasized the importance of unity, purpose, and excellence in service. “May we continue to serve with excellence, unity, and purpose,” he said. “The future is brighter because we walk it together.”
The station’s management and board of advisors joined in celebrating this significant anniversary, praising the team’s dedication to keeping the spirit of Radio Joy Africa alive. “Happy 15th Anniversary to us all – keep shining, keep broadcasting JOY!” the message concluded.
As part of its expansion drive, the station is constructing a new headquarters in Kakata and has acquired land in Bong and Montserrado Counties for the establishment of sub-stations. Plans are also underway to extend operations to Grand Bassa, Nimba, and Grand Cape Mount Counties.
In embracing the digital era, the station has strengthened its presence on Facebook and WhatsApp, with further plans to expand across additional online platforms to reach global audiences.
Radio Joy Africa maintains active partnerships with institutions, including BBC Media Action and the Liberia Media for Democratic Initiative (LMDI), and is a proud member of the Association of Liberia Community Radio (ALICOR). Its recent recognitions include the Progressive Youths Movement of Liberia’s 2025 Excellent Media Performance Award on Drug Awareness, and honors from the International Youth Fellowship and the Archdiocese of Monrovia.
Reaffirming its mission, the station pledged to continue championing peace, democracy, education, and social inclusion through responsible journalism. As it celebrates 15 years of broadcasting, Radio Joy Africa says its vision remains clear, to build a society where diverse voices are informed, educated, and entertained through relevant and responsible media content.
