A new radio station, You FM, has entered the South African broadcast landscape with a bold promise to reshape radio for a modern, urban audience. The station, which launched this month in Rustenburg, replaces the now-defunct Northwest FM and is operated by the black-owned Motswako Media Group (MMG).
Led by seasoned broadcaster Tebogo Pooe, You FM targets the 24–44 age group with a content mix of music, talk, and hourly news. The station broadcasts 70% in English but incorporates all official languages, reflecting the diversity of the North West’s increasingly cosmopolitan population.
Pooe, who is also MMG’s chairman and CEO of You FM, says the station is listener-led and committed to building long-term value. He believes You FM will break even within five years and remain resilient despite the rise of digital media.
“You FM is a rebel with a cause,” said Pooe, stressing the station’s commitment to female empowerment, talent development, and content that resonates with a “predominantly black” and urban audience. The station can already be heard beyond the Northwest, including parts of Gauteng, Limpopo, and the Northern Cape
On-air presenter Bonolo “Bee Sting” Molosiwa emphasized that the station is about giving listeners a voice: “Radio is not about the presenter. It’s about the listener — you.”
You FM broadcasts 24/7 on 89.9 FM under the slogan “In Tune with You.”
