Citi FM Ends 18-year run of EPL commentary in Ghana

Popular Ghanaian private radio station Citi FM 97.3 has announced it will no longer broadcast live commentary of the English Premier League (EPL), bringing an end to an 18-year tradition that made the station a household name among football lovers.

In a statement signed by Managing Director Samuel Attah-Mensah, Citi FM said the decision was driven by the sharp rise in subscription fees, which has made sustaining the service financially impossible.

“This has been a tough call for us, given our history and the loyalty of our listeners,” the statement read. “For 18 years, we have taken pride in bringing every kick, goal, and thrilling moment of the EPL to homes and offices across the country. Unfortunately, the current cost structure makes it unsustainable for us to continue.”

Since joining as a rebroadcast partner in the mid-2000s, Citi FM has aired nearly every EPL fixture, along with the FA Cup and League Cup, building a devoted fan base and cementing its place as a leader in sports broadcasting in Ghana.

The 2025/26 EPL season kicks off this weekend, but Citi FM confirmed it will not carry the live commentary. Despite this, the station assured fans it will maintain strong sports coverage through news, analysis, and updates across all platforms.

The announcement marks the end of an era for many Ghanaian listeners who had come to rely on Citi FM’s weekend match-day broadcasts as part of their football culture.
