Liberia community radio sector loses two broadcasters in three days

Liberia’s community radio sector has been plunged into mourning following the deaths of two veteran broadcasters in Margibi County within three days.

The first loss was recorded on Monday when Daniel Zazay, manager of Peace FM in Harbel, died at the Firestone Duside Hospital after a brief illness.

The Association of Liberia Community Radios (ALICOR) announced his passing in a statement, describing Zazay as a pioneer in Liberia’s community radio movement.

The Association of Liberia Community Radios (ALICOR) expresses deep regret and profound sadness over the passing of veteran community radio broadcaster, Mr. Daniel Zazay, former Manager of Peace FM in Harbel, one of ALICOR’s pioneer member stations,” the organization said.

ALICOR said Zazay’s contributions to community media and public information dissemination would remain a lasting part of Liberia’s media landscape.

The association extended condolences to the management and staff of Peace FM and to the broadcaster’s family, adding that it would collaborate with the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) to open a book of condolence in his honor.

Three days later, the sector was hit by another loss with reports of the death of Amos Kornonmugie of Radio Joy Africa in Kakata.

Before joining Radio Joy Africa, Kornonmugie served as station manager of Radio Gbartala in neighboring Bong County, where he was widely known for his commitment to rural broadcasting and community engagement.

The deaths of the two broadcasters have sparked tributes from journalists and media practitioners across Liberia, highlighting the important role community radio continues to play in providing information and public service programming to rural communities.
