Liberian senator, Jonathan Boycharles Sogbie of Rover Gee County has come to the aid of Radio Gee, donating a brand-new Deye 6KW inverter to address the technical challenges that had left the county’s only community radio station intermittently off-air for more than a month.
The community radio station, which has relied on a solar energy system provided by Internews Liberia in early 2024, was crippled after its original Deye inverter broke down. The failure led to repeated outages, disrupting Radio Gee’s ability to deliver consistent news and vital public service information to residents of the county.
Radio Gee’s Manager, Archie Kollie, expressed deep gratitude to Senator Sogbie, for what he called a “timely and critical intervention.” He described the donation as a major boost to the station’s stability and credibility, noting that it reinforces Radio Gee’s mandate as the county’s only community-based broadcast outlet.
“This gesture has not only restored our power supply but has also restored confidence in our ability to keep the people of River Gee informed,” Kollie said. “We urge the public and stakeholders to continue supporting the station to ensure its sustainability and effectiveness.”
Kollie further explained that while Radio Gee had recently launched a “Dollar Relay” fundraising campaign to purchase a new inverter, the senator’s donation now frees up those funds to be redirected toward other critical needs, including a laptop, headsets, wireless microphones, and standard broadcast microphones to enhance programming quality.
Observers say the senator’s support highlights the vital role of community radio in bridging the information gap in rural Liberia, where access to reliable news remains limited.
