Senior reporter resigns from Liberian community radio Magic FM in Grand Bassa

A senior journalist at one of Liberia’s community radio stations has resigned from his position, marking the end of a notable chapter in local broadcasting in the port city of Buchanan.

King Brown officially stepped down from Magic Radio 99.3 FM on May 5, citing personal reasons in a resignation letter addressed to Station Manager Christopher Yarwoe. His resignation took immediate effect.

Brown joined the Buchanan-based community station in February 2019 and became one of its prominent newsroom figures, serving in several roles including Senior Reporter, talk show host, and Head of Production. He was also actively involved in mentoring and training intern reporters, contributing to the development of young journalists in Grand Bassa County.

In his resignation letter, Brown described his years at the station as “a wonderful journey filled with meaningful experiences and valuable lessons,” while expressing appreciation to management and colleagues for their support and collaboration.

Community radio stations remain central to Liberia’s media landscape, particularly outside the capital, where radio continues to serve as the primary source of news, civic education, and public discussion. Journalists working in county-based stations often perform multiple functions, including reporting, production, presenting, and training junior staff due to limited resources and staffing constraints.

During his time at Magic Radio, Brown built a reputation for community-centered reporting and public affairs programming. Colleagues say he played a significant role in strengthening local news coverage and supporting station operations.

His departure highlights both the fluid nature of Liberia’s local media sector and the important role experienced journalists play in sustaining community broadcasting. Media observers note that retaining skilled broadcasters remains a challenge for many rural radio stations operating under financial and logistical pressures.

No announcement has yet been made regarding Brown’s next professional move or who will assume his responsibilities at the station.

For listeners in Buchanan and surrounding communities, Brown’s resignation marks the departure of a familiar voice from one of the region’s established community broadcasters.
