Staff and management at Radio Nigeria’s Bronze FM in Benin City gathered to honor their outgoing Head of News, Ojo Suleiman, in a historic send-off party ahead of his official retirement.
The ceremony marked a major milestone for the broadcast station, serving as the very first retirement celebration organized by Bronze FM since its establishment 15 years ago. The event drew an array of colleagues, friends, and media associates to celebrate Suleiman’s decades-long impact on public service broadcasting in Nigeria.
Suleiman, who reached the mandatory retirement age of 60, concluded a distinguished career that began in 1995 when he joined the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in Abuja as an Assistant Language Translator. Over the course of 31 years, he rose steadily through the corporate ranks of the network, ultimately achieving the rank of Assistant Director of News.
Throughout the celebration, colleagues paid glowing tribute to Suleiman’s administrative style, consistently emphasizing his compassion and commitment to employee welfare.
Former Head of News, Mrs. Chinyere Onyeagba, and the current Head of Outside Broadcast, Mr. Ken Eromobor, praised Suleiman as an exemplary and approachable leader. “One remarkable characteristic of Mr. Ojo Suleiman is his humility,” they noted in a joint statement, highlighting his unique ability to relate closely with staff at all levels to achieve operational goals.
Other personnel shared deeply personal accounts of Suleiman’s tenure. Station presenter Mr. Efosa Osawoyi recounted a past medical emergency in the office, recalling how Suleiman personally transported him to the hospital and covered his medical bills out of pocket without ever seeking reimbursement.
Bronze FM’s General Manager, Comrade Victorson Agbenson, described the retiring news chief as a highly diligent administrator whose decision-making always prioritized human elements and staff well-being. Agbenson urged the station’s remaining workforce to emulate Suleiman’s dedicated work ethic.
In his valedictory remarks, Suleiman expressed gratitude to the station and urged the next generation of Nigerian broadcasters to maintain strong professional standards, respect constituted authority, and remain deeply dedicated to their duties.
