Tuks FM presenter and University of Pretoria student Tshegofatso Makola has earned international acclaim after being named Best News Broadcaster at the International Student Broadcasting Championship. The young broadcaster, who was also nominated for Best Talk Presenter, says the recognition affirms her passion for news and confirms she is “on the right path.”
Makola attributes her win to authenticity, strong preparation, and her commitment to delivering clear, accessible news. “I believe news should be understandable to everyone, no jargon, no complications,” she said, adding that simplifying information is especially important for younger audiences who often feel disconnected from traditional news formats.
Known for her rigorous preparation and dedication to accuracy, Makola says she “eats, breathes and sleeps news,” a trait she believes set her apart. She credits her station manager, Nicole da Silva, along with years of listening to seasoned broadcasters, for shaping her on-air style.
Participating in the global competition, Makola says, expanded her perspective on international broadcasting standards and pushed her to grow beyond familiar South African formats.
Reflecting on the year, she highlighted moderating political panel discussions, including a Tuks FM roundtable with Dan Corder and Amahle Jaxa ahead of the SRC elections, as a standout moment that showcased radio’s influence in driving youth participation.
Makola says what she loves most about broadcasting is the impact it has: “I enjoy feeling like I’m contributing to something that shapes thinking and sparks conversation.”
Looking ahead, she plans to deepen her field reporting as South Africa enters a major news year with the upcoming local government elections. “The possibilities are endless,” she says.
She credits mentors Lwazi Mpofu and Lundi Khoisan, as well as her family, for pushing her creativity and nurturing her passion for radio from an early age.
